i finally watched the susan boyle video.

it made me aware of myself in a way i didn't like. going into it knowing she was going to blow them away, i could easily look at their grimaces and mean-spirited faces and say "oh, haha! they're going to get it!"

but if i hadn't know, what would my initial reaction would've been? i didn't think she was particularly unattractive, but would i have been like "hey, now, that's rude!"...or would i have laughed along.

either way, i was reading this article and this whole thing is just making me cry. especially when you stop to think that this might just be another fucking publicity stunt.

Susan will probably win Britain's Got Talent. She will be the little munter that could sing, served up for the British public every Saturday night. Look! It's "ugly"! It sings! And I know that we think that this will make us better people. But Susan Boyle will be the freakish exception that makes the rule. By raising this Susan up, we will forgive ourselves for grinding every other Susan into the dust. It will be a very partial and poisoned redemption. Because Britain's Got Malice. Sing, Susan, sing - to an ugly crowd that doesn't deserve you.

jesus fuck. i hate society.
